Just 95 more hours...

Today was a great day. I finished all 4 of my final exams in just 2 hours, then I went to the mall and did a little bit more Christmas shopping - I'm almost finished now!

I just received an e-mail from the person who will be picking me up on Monday to go to Oakville. In 95 hours I will be on my way to training. I am getting picked up around 4:00 on Monday afternoon and I am so excited!

I just finished packing almost all the things I'm bringing with me. All that's left to pack is essentials that I still need until Monday, as well as a few snacks.

Here is a list of what I'm bringing with me:

  • Clothes (probably too many but I need options)
  • Tons of PJ pants because I hear it's cold
  • Slippers also because it's cold
  • Soap, shampoo, hairspray, etc.
  • Makeup (surprisingly not as much as usual...I don't think my dog will care how I look)
  • Computer
  • Hard drive full of books and movies
  • Sims 4
  • DSLR (camera) - I know I'll constantly be taking pictures of my new best friend!
  • Nintendo 3DS, Animal Crossing, and Mario Party
  • Things to knit
  • Blanket for my dog to lay on
  • Notebook to keep notes/journal
  • A few healthy snacks (carrots, bananas, berries, cucumber, apples, etc.)- I'm not sure how healthy the food will be that's provided so I'm coming prepared to try and maintain my weight.
The most surprisingly thing that's happened to me today is that I managed to fit all of my belongings into just one suitcase! YAY!

Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything. I still have a few more days to make sure I have everything I'll need while I'm away. I can't wait to meet all of the people I've been talking to online and I am so excited to share pictures of my dog with you all!

xoxo.

Only 7 more days!

Wow! I can't believe how fast the time has gone, despite how long every day seems to be lately. I remember the day I got the phone was 20 days away from Dec. 1st and now there's only 7 more days before I pack up and leave for training! It's so exciting and every day seems to go by very slowly. I have a very busy week with in-class assignments and 4 final exams to do but all I can seem to think about is what dog bowls I want to buy and what toys I want to get next.

This weekend I went to 3 different pet stores to buy a bed, food, and one toy. I know I am not supposed to buy anything before I go to training but I couldn't resist. The bed I've been dreaming about buying was on sale for $55.00 (regularly 70!) at Pet Smart. So  when I got there and brought it up to the cash register I asked if they give any discounts for service dog owners. I was told that they give 30% off anything in the store and would honour the discount to me today even though I don't have my dog yet. After the discount, my total came to $25 dollars with tax! It turns out that the tag on the bed was for the size smaller than what I purchased so it rang up as 45.00 before the 30% discount! I was prepared to pay 55 bucks for the bed so swiping my visa for a 25 dollar purchase felt fantastic.

This weekend I also finally decided what food I am going to try feeding my dog when we come home together. Since the school is sponsored by Purina, that is what all of the dogs are being fed currently. I wanted to find a dog food that is grain-free and high in protein. These foods may cost more upfront but the dog has to eat half of the amount (instead of 6 cups, the dog would only need 2 1/2 to 3 cups per day). The food I have chosen to try first is Natures Variety Instinct with Raw Boost. I purchased a small 4lb. bag of the chicken recipe to get us through the first few days at home and to see how the dog takes to it. I am hoping it goes over well as this is one of the best foods Pet Smart sells and I just can't beat the 30% discount! All other stores in my area (pet valu, global foods, etc.) only offer a 10% discount. If my dog doesn't like this food my next choice is probably going to be wellness core as this is also a great option.

Here is a picture of the bed and skineeez fox toy I purchased over the last few days. The skineeez toy I got at Ren's Pet Depot during their biggest sale of the year on Saturday. I initially went there to buy food and a bed too but they were sold out of the bed that they had on sale for 15 dollars and so I had to go to Pet Smart anyways. I'm glad I did or else I would never have known they offer such a large discount to service dog owners!

Isn't it just so cute! I think it works great for a girl or a boy. Grey is definitely my favourite colour. I love purple too so it's perfect.

Now I just have to try and focus on studying for my exams and then figure out what to bring. I'll be posting at least one more update on my blog before I leave. So check back here in a few days if you want to see everything I'm bringing with me to training.

xoxo.

P.S. Just SEVEN more days!!

The last 10 months of my life

I applied for my service dog in January of 2014. I had my home visit/interview in February and was accepted in March/April (I can't quite remember when it was).
Being accepted into the SSD (Special Skills Dog) program was a dream come true for me. The letter in the mail telling me that I had been put on the waiting list opened my eyes to so many new possibilities.

Since that day last spring, I have been patiently waiting for the phone call. I didn't expect for the Lion's Foundation to find a match for me until the Spring of 2015. However, one week ago I got the phone call that will forever change my life... THERE IS A DOG WAITING FOR ME - Best Christmas present ever!
I get to find out all about him or her in just two more weeks. Right now I don't know anything about my dog. I leave for training on Dec. 1st and return home, with my service dog, on December 19th.

There is so much to do to prepare for training. I had to notify my professors and re-schedule my final exams to one week prior (they were supposed to be the week of Dec. 1st but I won't be here!). Now I need to pack my life into two tiny suitcases for my 3 week stay at the facility, finish all of my christmas shopping before I leave, find a vet that will provide discounts to service animals as well as a pet store that provides discounts, "dog-proof" my home, and much more.

I am so excited to share my adventures as a service dog handler with you. I'm sure there will be many interesting, funny, and even some frustrating stories to tell you along the way. Most of all, I can't wait to introduce you to my new best friend! :)
